“그때는 씬이 있었으니까”
인천음악창작소 포트락(PORT ROCK) 개소를 맞아 인천대중음악사를 기록한 전시 비욘드 레코드(Beyond Record)를 개최한다. 비욘드 레코드는 2016년 시작된 아카이브·전시 프로젝트로 1960년대부터 1990년대까지 인천에서 다양한 음악 활동을 해왔던 사람들과 락·헤비메탈 씬(Scene)을 만들었던 이들의 이야기를 발굴하고 기록해 온 것이다.
‘비욘드 레코드’는 과거에 말과 파편으로만 떠돌았던 인천 대중음악씬의 태동과 전개를 한데 모은 최초의 시도였다. 이후 2017년 ‘비욘드 레코드 로칼리카 (Locallica)’에서 광역시로서 각각의 대중음악, 클럽 문화를 형성해 온 인천·대구·부산 씬의 과거와 현재를 살펴보았고, 2022년 인천 음악사의 주요 장소 중 하나인 부평 애스컴(ASCOM)에 문을 연인천음악창작소에서 인천 대중음악의 흐름과 의미를 재조명하게 된 것이다.
이번 전시 제목도 ‘비욘드 레코드’이다. 이는 과거로부터 현재까지 이어지고 있는 인천 대중음악인들의 활동이 음악창작소를 통해 진보하여 새로운 역사를 이어가길 바라는 의도이다. 80년대 인천 락, 헤비메탈 씬의 형성과 활동을 이끈 밴드 <사하라>의 멤버 우정주의 말처럼 “그때는 인천에 씬이 있었으니까” 지금도, 그리고 앞으로도 가능할 것이다. 다만 우리는 2022년을 살아가고 있으므로 그 양상 은 분명히 다르며, 달라질 것이다. 그래서 더더욱 ‘정체성’‘지역성’이라는 범위 안에 음악인들의 활동을 가두려고 하는 해묵은 논의는 없어야 한다. 무엇보다 음악에는 경계와 한계가 없기 때문이다.
음악은 눈에 보이지 않는다. 그러나 음의 파동은 경계를 넘나들며 상징과 의미를 만들고 사람들의 감정을 뒤흔들고 변화를 만들어낸다. 여전히 이 도시 안에서 사람들은 그 파동을 만들어 내며 경계를 넘나들고 있다. 도시‘인천’이 그 자양분 이자 장(場)으로 남아 그 활동들이 끊이지 않고 인천 음악씬의 역사로 앞으로도 기록되어 가길 바란다.

“Because there was a scene in those days.”
In celebration of the Incheon Music Creation Center Port Rock's opening, Beyond Record will hold an exhibition on the history of popular music in Incheon. Since 2016, Beyond Record’s archival and exhibition projects have discovered and recorded the stories of those who were involved in Incheon’s music history between the 1960s – 90s as well as those who created the local rock and heavy metal scene.
This is the first attempt to assemble the birth and development of Incheon’s fleeting popular music scene, known only through fragments in the past. Post 2017, ‘Beyond Record Locallica’ examined the past and present of popular music and club culture in Incheon, Daegu, and Busan. The waves of music that appeared in Bupyeong District’s ASCOM city, site of the Music Creation Center and central location in Incheon’s music history, is 2022’s focus.
‘Beyond Record’ is also the name of this exhibition. The Music Creation Center’s intention is for local musician activities to continue forward and build a new history that is still born from its past. As Woo Jeong-joo (member of the band Sahara who led the formation of Incheon’s rock and metal scene in the 80s) states, “Because there was a scene in Incheon in those days,” it’s possible for it to exist in the future. The conditions are different living in 2022 though, and discussions should not be merely confined to identity and locality as music, above all, has no boundaries or limits.
Music is invisible. However, sound waves can cross boundaries, create symbols and meanings, evoke emotions, and lead to change. People in this city still create waves and cross boundaries. It’s hoped that the city continually provides nourishment for these activities to continue as they create a new era within Incheon’s music history.
