For 45 years, the Naeja Hotel in Naeja-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, was a center for cross-cultural exchange.
After Korea won their independence from Japan in 1945, a cutting-edge 4-story residential apartment building (originally built 10 years prior by the Mikuni Corporation to house its Japanese employees) was converted into the Naeja Hotel. Under its new name, it began providing free accommodation for US troops, and during the wartime era of 1950-53, it was an epicenter for global news as the Foreign Correspondents’ Club Headquarters.
For varying lengths of time from 1955-61, it also served as a base for the Economic Assistance Corps, the UN Korea Reconstruction Committee, and the US Foreign Aid Agency. (Rumor has it that its rooftop garden was a hotspot for many a lively jazz band, too). It continued to house US troops until its demolition in August of 1990, and the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency now stands in its place.
This collection of images depicts a Christmas party in the Naeja Hotel: performances by a Korean children’s choir and young violin duo, wine bottles and fruit cocktails galore, and western and Korean dinner guests side-by-side.
Among the most notable images is that of a Korean woman and a western woman, grinning arm-in-arm, both wearing hanbok and plastic poinsettia flowers pinned to their hair. This is the only photo of its kind in the Archive to-date, and we’re still left with dozens more questions about the identities, professions, and backgrounds of these dinner guests. The photographer, Glen Parker, was an American professor who traveled the world before settling in Austin, TX – but beyond this, we have no true leads as to how he ended up at the Naeja hotel for this special occasion.
As for the dates of the images: a 1955 wine label, coupled with the fashions of the dinner guests, led us to estimate them somewhere between 1956 and 1958. We’re just scratching the surface of the stories this collection has to tell, and we’re excited to continue expanding upon the image descriptions as we uncover more.
