Camptowns developed around US military bases in Korea as these forces became permanent fixtures in Korea's landscape. One set of primary occupants were the camptown women who engaged in prostitution with American soldiers. Many women from poor rural areas or women who lost their families during the Korean War first arrived at camptowns or nearby cities looking for well-paying jobs and were ultimately trafficked into this position.
