Blair Kanghyuk Naujok
Founder & Director

The Archive is one step of a journey taken by founder & director Blair KH Naujok to understand his family history, cultural identity, and place in the world. He spent 4 years in his grandmother’s hometown, Seoul, and once considered it his permanent home. During this stay he inherited 300 35mm slides taken by his grandfather stationed in Korea between 1957-61. Friends and colleagues had positive yet surprising reactions to these images, with many stating they’d never seen this period of Korean history in color. After returning to the US, Blair created the Archive to maintain his connection to Korea and contribute to a society that is still a part of him.

Julian Joseph (오른쪽 - right)
Project Manager

As a close friend to the founder, Julian has donated his time as a project manager and technical consultant. Being an Asian American Studies major, he learned to value the importance of collecting historical material, but his interest in Korea is fueled by his involvement with the nonprofit Liberty in North Korea. Volunteering for LiNK led him to live in South Korea to work with former North Korean refugees. Currently, he lives in San Diego and remotely supports organizations like this one.

Heesoo Jung
Translation

Heesoo received her BA in Forensic Psychology at John Jay College in New York and MSc in Investigative Psychology at the University of Huddersfield in the UK. Experience in various forensic and government organizations led her to reconsider the importance of public awareness towards various subjects. As a result, she began carrying out projects to convey the latest research trends in academia to the public.

While developing these projects, Heesoo further realized that reflecting on daily matters is also important. So she studied philosophy at Otago University in New Zealand and recently launched the magazine <Contemplative>, hoping to make a more contemplative society.

Now she works as the CEO of Team Contemplative, studies Experimental Humanities and Social Engagement at New York University, and recently began volunteering with Korean Image Archive as translation staff. Heesoo says she was inspired to join the Archive because of its vision and goal in sharing historically valuable images with people rather than using them for profit.

Hyojin Choi
Research & Translation

Hyojin currently works at an arts & culture public institution in Korea while pursuing a PhD in art history. She wants to contribute to connecting Korea’s past and present specifically through historic materials created by foreigners that are now scattered abroad. Within Korean Image Archive, she discovers important photographic material recorded before and after the Korean war and assists with their English-Korean translation so they can be meaningfully disseminated.

Madison

Madison Bouse
Marketing Manager

Madison interned with Liberty in North Korea in 2015-16 before studying Korean language & culture at Washington University in St. Louis and Hanguk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul. After inheriting a collection of family photographs and letters spanning from the 1910s to the 1960s, in 2011 she picked up a lifelong habit of rescuing abandoned memories from the 50-cent photo bins of antique shops around the US. But photographs from the first half of 20th-century Korea are comparably hard to come by, and Madison is thrilled at the opportunity to help enrich modern-day Korea’s connection to its past through preserving and promoting Korean Image Archive’s priceless collections as its marketing manager.

In her spare time, Madison also shares educational content about historical clothing via Instagram, and in the upcoming months she looks forward to highlighting the Archive’s extensive collection of photographs documenting Korea’s fascinating dress history.

Ki-Hong Daniel Park
Technical Support

After finishing military service in Korea and college in Georgia, Ki-Hong interned first at Liberty in North Korea's Los Angeles HQ, and later worked for an IT company back in Korea. He met Blair in Korea in 2017. After moving to St. Louis in 2019 with his wife, Madison, he became fascinated with the way Blair's work focuses on preserving stories of ordinary people's lives. In 2022, Ki Hong volunteered to provide his technical expertise to the Archive.
